Title Tag:

Also known as a meta title, a title tag refers to the text that is displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs), and indicates the topic of the webpage.

Think of title tags as cards in a library card catalog. A search engine is the organizes index of information, and the title tags are the methodically arranged cards within that index.

Writing strong title tags is crucial to effective SEO practices and ranking in organic search. This is because search engines analyze these title tags to navigate the topic of your page and rank it accordingly.

Below are some best practices to remember while writing a title tag:

  • Be specific but concise
  • Incorporate power words
  • Make it interesting
  • Make the keyword obvious
  • Stick to a 55-character limit

This is a great example from the CoSchedule blog because it stays within the Google character limit, makes good use of the key phrase (i.e. “Blog Post Ideas”), and contains power words like “Creative” and “Delight”.
