Why is the image for my link missing in my social message?

Something may be going on with the data that the site is passing back to social networks to generate link previews. In short, the data that’s needed to generate an image preview is requested from the site when your message is created on a social network. At that time, the site will need to provide data to generate a preview, otherwise, you will see a “blank”, or unintended image in the preview.

Put simply, a degree of control is possible over how information travels from websites to social networks. In order to make this possible, information is sent via Open Graph meta tags in the website’s code.

Troubleshooting

Some troubleshooting tools you can use are:

• Facebook’s Link Debugging tool: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

•Twitter’s Card Validator: https://cards-dev.twitter.com/validator

• LinkedIn’s Post Inspector: https://www.linkedin.com/post-inspector/

• Open Graph health check: https://opengraphcheck.com/

If you own the website

We recommend reaching out to your Site Admin and asking them to take a closer look at what might be going on. We also suggest checking that Meta Tags are being properly assigned on your blog post. The most popular way of doing this is by using yoast.com as a plugin.
