Connect Bitly and CoSchedule swaps the links in your social messages for Bitly short links when they publish. Available on every plan, including the free plan.
Bitly doesn't shorten links in messages to Instagram, LinkedIn (profiles and pages) or Pinterest.
Connect Bitly
- From your calendar, open Settings.
- Click Integrations.
- Find Bitly and click Enable.
- Click Connect Bitly and follow the prompts to sign in to Bitly.
If the Google Analytics integration is on, Bitly can make several short links for the same page, because each set of UTM tags makes the link unique.
Turn off Bitly for one message
- Open the social message.
- Click the ellipsis menu at the bottom of the message.
- Select Disable Bitly.
Bitly stays on for the rest of your calendar.
Change or disconnect the Bitly account
Disconnect Bitly to stop shortening links on your calendar, or to swap in a different Bitly account, for example when the person who connected it leaves your team.
- Go to Settings > Integrations > Bitly.
- Click Disconnect.
- To use another account, click Connect Bitly and sign in with that Bitly account.
Fix "You have reached your monthly Bitly quota"
If Bitly refuses to shorten a link, the whole message fails to send. The usual reason is that your Bitly account has reached its usage limit, or its limit on branded links. The limit is on your Bitly account, not in CoSchedule. Fix it in one of these ways:
- Raise your limit with Bitly. Bitly explains its usage limits.
- Turn off Bitly for the message.
- Disconnect Bitly from your calendar. Messages then publish with the full link.
Then reschedule each failed message. Failed messages don't retry on their own. See Reschedule a social message.
Fix broken Bitly links
- Don't copy the placeholder link. Until a message publishes, its preview shows a placeholder short link: bit.ly/ followed by asterisks. CoSchedule makes the real short link at publish time, so the link stays right even if the page address changes after you schedule. If you paste the placeholder into another message, that link breaks. Add the real URL instead, or use the {permalink} social helper in a social campaign.
- Don't shorten links yourself. A link that's already shortened usually breaks when Bitly is on. Use the full link, or turn off Bitly for that message.
- Use one URL per message, with no spaces after it.
Frequently asked questions
Do custom branded Bitly links work?
Yes. Set your branded domain as the default domain in Bitly, and CoSchedule uses it. Bitly explains how to change your default domain.
Why doesn't the preview show my branded link?
CoSchedule gets the short link from Bitly when the message publishes, so the preview shows the placeholder until then.
Do messages that ReQueue reshares get new short links?
No. A ReQueue copy keeps the link it already has.
